ABOUT DIRECT REPAIR SHOPS AND DRPS

If an auto body shop provides collision repair, dent repair, auto body restoration and other auto body-related damages for which auto insurance companies usually pay claims, they may be able to become a Direct Repair Shop. To become a Direct Repair Shop, the body shop must participate in an insurance company’s Direct Repair Program, also known as a DRP.

While 70 West Body Shop is a member of several DRPs, we are picky about the DRPs we’ll join. We partner only with companies that don’t require customers to use sub-par or after-market products. You should never have to give up safety, durability, or quality when your vehicle is being repaired or restored.

DO I HAVE TO USE MY INSURANCE COMPANY’S DRP AUTO BODY SHOP?

Just because an auto body shop isn’t part of your insurance company’s direct repair auto body shop program doesn’t mean you can’t use it! Legally, insurance companies cannot require you to use an auto body shop from their preferred list. This is an illegal practice known as “steering” in the auto insurance industry. Learn more about your rights.

DIRECT REPAIR PROGRAM (DRP) PROS AND CONS

A DRP can have many benefits but may also include body shops or collision centers that provide lower-quality results. The DRP benefits may extend to body shop/car insurance customers and collision repair shops while definitely benefitting insurance companies.

Auto body shop customers may benefit from a DRP because insurance companies can help customers find an auto body shop for dent repair and more serious work requiring even custom collision repairs. This can alleviate a great deal of stress for a customer who has been through a traumatic accident. Also, in order for an auto body shop or collision center to qualify for participation in a Direct Repair Program, they must have their credentials examined for collision repairs, dent repair, and other vehicle restoration services. The insurance company considering a body shop’s application confirms these credentials so their customers can have some confidence regarding the collision center they select.

Body shops and collision centers benefit from DRPs because they can be a good source for new customers. Some DRPs offer incentives to members for getting repairs done cheaply and quickly. Again, 70 West Body Shop won’t partner with insurance companies that require quality and/or safety compromises.

Insurance companies can maximize their profits if they choose to allow mainly lower-priced collision centers and auto body restoration shops to participate in their DRP. They may also fail to explain to customers their rights in choosing a repair shop.
